Last November, extreme sportsman and Madison County native Beagle Jarvis made the official announcement that the Madison County Gravity Fest would return to the winding East Hill Road after a five year hiatus on Aug. 9 to 11. He’s been lining up top talent, and said he expects some 300 of his fellow street luge racers to come to Central New York for the festivities.
Madison County Gravity Festival and IGSA are announcing this event as an IGSA National. IGSA is happy to be on board with the MCGF for the 2013 season.
Jarvis himself is thrilled to be able to bring his sport back to his home area. “I’m really stoked about this,” he said last week in a telephone interview from Alaska. “It’s been out of town for awhile and I think people are really excited about it coming back. We’re getting a lot of great response - they always roll out the red carpet for us.”
Jarvis said they are looking for some major sponsors to help with expenses, and explained that all profits above the costs of running the Gravity Fest and transportation for racers would be donated back to the community.
The Madison County Gravity Fest was last held on East Hill Road in 2008, and since then the extreme sport has been absent from the area. The road has been repaved to give the street luge and skateboard-riding racers a more even and faster surface and now Jarvis expects the new and improved Gravity Fest to be bigger than ever.
Racers at the event in past years said they enjoyed the East Hill Road course. Kelli Koch, of Quebec, and Michael Friefeld, of Long Island, made their first visits to Munnsville for the 2007 Gravity Fest, and applauded the efforts of the organizers and the community for giving them a great time.
The 1.5 mile winding raceway is on a par with the best they compete on, the racers agreed, and the local scenery lent a little extra special thrill to the competition.
